St. Valentine's Day Information

When is it?
February 14

Who celebrates it and where?
Friends and lovers.

What is it?
Saint Valentine's (the patron saint of lovers) Day celebrates love.

Why did it get started?
Valentines Day began in Roman times. One Legend says that Valentine performed secret marriages, which were banned. Another, that he cured his jailers daughter of blindness and before his execution he sent her a message signed "your Valentine." Another, associated with the festival of Lupercalia (possibly originally honoring the Roman crop god Faunus and later honoring Lupercus the god of fertility), on February 15, when youths would draw names for their love for a year. Eventually, people began sending handwritten notes expressing their love.

How do people celebrate it?
Today people send printed cards, candy in heart shaped boxes and flowers to loved ones.

What are the symbols?
Cupid (the Roman god of carnal love) a winged naked infant boy who shoots his arrows at people to make them fall in love. Also red hearts, roses and love.

How can I celebrate it?
Wear an article of red clothing and send your friends special cards or gifts such as: flowers, balloons and if they are really special, jewelry.
