Who celebrates it and where? Those of Irish heritage (and some that wish they were). |

What is it? Saint Patrick's Day is a holiday celebrating his death. |

Why did it get started? Saint Patrick, not born in Ireland, became it's patron Saint. He was captured, sold into slavery in Ireland and eventually escaped. He became a Bishop in Ireland and proceeded to convert the Irish to Christianity. Legend has it that he drove the snakes from Ireland. His death on March 17 was originally an occasion of mourning. |

How do people celebrate it? Today Irish Americans celebrate their heritage by wearing green clothes and drinking green beer. They also watch, or participate in, the New York St. Patrick's Day Parade past St. Patrick's Cathedral. |

What are the symbols? The shamrock (a three leaf clover) signifying the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Leprechaun a tiny elf who protects his pot of gold. |

How can I celebrate it? Wear green clothes and or a green carnation. Decorate your home with green shamrocks and pots of gold. Watch the St. Patrick's Day Parades. Have a party with corned beef and cabbage (an American tradition) and drink green beer. |
