What is it?
The first day of a new year.

Why did it get started?
Celebrating the beginning of a new year is a tradition for many people, and varies as to the date that it is celebrated according the calendar people use. Traditionally it was celebrated in spring to mark the beginning of the growing season. In 1582 the Gregorian calendar set January 1 as the beginning of the new year, many European countries adopted it then, Germany adopted it in 1700, England (and it's colonies) in 1752, Sweden in 1753, Japan in 1873, and China in 1912, Russia in 1918.

How do people celebrate it?
Making resolutions for the coming year, watching parades and football on television, visiting family and friends, going to church, singing songs to bring good luck, putting forth extra effort to start out the new year on the right foot, special performances, wearing new clothes, eating special foods, and exchanging gifts are just some of the things people do to celebrate New Year's Day.

What are the symbols?
The New Year baby is used as a symbol of rebirth of a new year.

How can I celebrate it?
Have a New Year's Eve party and make a resolution to give to those who have not in the new year.
