Why did it get started? Burma, a republic in South East Asia, was under British rule until World War II, when Japan captured it. After driving out the Japanese they didn't want to return to British rule, and were given their independence on January 4, 1948. Burma was officially renamed Union of Myanmar later. |

How do people celebrate it? People decorate for festivities, dress in native costume and eat traditional foods including: noodles and chicken, and tea. |

What are the symbols? The Myanmar flag depicts a cogwheel containing a stalk of rice circled by 14 stars representing the administrative branches of government. There are also many pagodas in Myanmar. |
