May Day Information

When is it?
May 1

Who celebrates it and where?
Many people throughout the world.

What is it?
A celebration of nature and fertility.

Why did it get started?
May Day started as a holiday celebrating the beginning of summer. The festival of Beltane traditions were to set a new fire to honor the sun god and play games to test warriors skills. The festival of Floralia included bringing a tree trunk into town, dancing around it, decorating it as a maypole and crowning a May Day Queen.

How do people celebrate it?
Today in may countries, it has become a labor day holiday with parades and speeches.

What are the symbols?
The maypole is a symbol of fertility.

How can I celebrate it?
Have a festival celebrating the season with garlands, baskets with flowers and a maypole. Gather around a bonfire and sing songs, dance and have lots of food.

Where can I get further information?
The Mayday on the Web site.
