Mardi Gras Information

When is it?
The Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and 47 days before Easter Sunday.

Who celebrates it and where?
Catholics and others in New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro and Venice.

What is it?
Mardi Gras which means Fat Tuesday, is a celebration before the season of Lent.

Why did it get started?
Pagan end of winter customs were incorporated by the Catholics. it then became a period of abandon and merriment that preceded the penance of Lent.

How do people celebrate it?
People hold carnivals, masquerade balls and parades. Masquerade Balls are formal affairs where girls are introduced into society. They include lots of dancing, toasts and men and women are crowned King and Queen for the year. Parade floats include masked krewe members throwing trinkets to the crowd of onlookers.

What are the symbols?
The colors of Mardi Gras are; purple which represents justice, green which stands for faith and gold which stands for power. Krewes are private social clubs. King Cake has a plastic baby hidden inside. Doubloons are metal coins. Throws include necklaces and other relatively worthless items.

How can I celebrate it?
You can celebrate Mardi Gras by holding a Costume Ball or Parade. Award prizes for the best float, costume, King Cake. Party hearty until Lent begins.
