Halloween Information

When is it?
October 31

Who celebrates it and where?
Many people throughout the world.

What is it?
The evening before the Celtic New Year which became All Hallows or All Saints Day and today Halloween. When the spirits of the dead walk the earth.

Why did it get started?
The Druids first celebrated the Eve of the New Year honoring the Lord of the Dead, Samhain by giving gifts and making sacrifices and lighting bonfires. Trick or Treating or going from door to door in costume is believed to have begun in Pagan times when people in costume went to homes were given a banquet and left the village leading the spirits away.

How do people celebrate it?
Today in the United States children go from door to door "trick or treating" for treats, and adults attend Halloween parties, parades and visit haunted houses. Some people celebrate by attending mass and saying prayers at loved ones graves. Others celebrate with traditional foods including apples and nuts. Superstition and making predictions also play a part in celebrations in some countries.

What are the symbols?
The Jack O Lantern, now a carved pumpkin, was originally carved out of turnips, potatoes and rutabagas by the Irish. Black cats were thought to be witches themselves. Ghosts and goblins of all sorts.

How can I celebrate it?
Have a Halloween party and go trick or treating in your neighborhood.
