Flag Day Information

When is it?
June 14.

Who celebrates it and where?
Citizens of the United States of America.

What is it?
The day when the Stars and Stripes pattern came into being.

Why did it get started?
On June 14, 1777 the Second Continental Congress of the United States authorized the new stars and stripes flag.
"Resolved, that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation."
In 1794 two new stars and stripes were added for two new states. In 1818 it went back to the original thirteen stripes, and one star for each state. Presently and since 1960, it consists of the original 13 stripes and 50 stars.
The first Flag Day celebration was in 1861 in Connecticut. The first national observance was in 1877, the centennial of the original resolution. In 1916 the President issued a proclamation calling for a nationwide observance. In 1949 the Congress made this a permanent observance.

How do people celebrate it?
Americans honor the history and heritage the Stars and Stripes represents. School students are taught about the flag. The flag is displayed on homes, businesses and government buildings.

What are the symbols?
The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag:
"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
