Epiphany Information

When is it?
January 6

Who celebrates it and where?
Christians

What is it?
The manifestation of Christ in the presence of the three kings, and when he was baptized and the Holy Spirit came and proclaimed him the Son of God.

Why did it get started?
The Epiphany has been celebrated longer than Christmas and with focus on different aspects of the same day's events. Epiphany is also known as the Twelfth Day, Three Kings Day, Day of Kings, Perchtennacht, Feast of Jordan, and Old Christmas.

How do people celebrate it?
People celebrate the Epiphany in many different ways. Children put out their shoes with hay and overnight presents replace it, they write letters to the Magi to tell them of their good deeds and ask them for gifts, they hold plays and pageants, they have cake with a prize inside with winners becoming King and Queen, consecrated chalk is used to write the three kings initials on doors and people don masks to scare away evil, and children are given presents for their good behavior.

What are the symbols?
The star was a guiding light. The three kings, also known as the wise men, and the Magi, came to worship and brought gifts. The dove a manifestation of the Holy Spirit.

How can I celebrate?
Produce a play depicting the Magi finding the baby Jesus in the manger, sing carols in your neighborhood, make a round cake with surprises inside.
