What is it? Berchtoldstag is a holiday celebrating a twelfth-century Duke. |
||||
Why did it get started? Honors Duke Berchtold V, who founded Bern, the capital of Switzerland. He promised to name the city after the first animal he killed on a hunt. The bear (bern in German) then provided the city's name. |

How do people celebrate it? Children have parties, eat and play games with nuts, sing and perform folk dances. |
||||
What are the symbols? The bear is the symbol on the coat of arms. |
||||
How can I celebrate it? Have a party complete with nuts and games. Design your own coat of arms with symbols that represent something meaningful to you. Write songs using the same symbols and perform them. |
